Walmart has pulled its Juneteenth-themed ice cream and issued an apology after social media backlash last week over accusations that the mega retailer was commercializing a federal holiday meant to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States.
Walmart pulled the ice cream, which was set to be “swirled red velvet and cheesecake” ice cream in a Pan-African colored tub that featured an image of two black hands high-fiving. “Share and celebrate African American culture, emancipation and enduring hope,” the label read, according to The Washington Post.
