Former President Donald Trump slammed Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday for skipping the Al Smith dinner in New York City in October, saying that she is “anti-Catholic.”
The Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner is an annual Catholic fundraiser that, during presidential election cycles, features the nominees of both of America’s two major political parties who engage in some self-deprecating humor and some light roasting of their opponent.
“It will be an honor to attend the SOLD OUT 79th ANNUAL AL SMITH DINNER on October 17th in New York,” Trump posted on social media. “It will be great to see so many wonderful people there, including Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan. We know the Spirit of Al Smith, the first Catholic Nominee of a Major Party, and John F. Kennedy, the FIRST Catholic President, will be in the room with us that night.”
Harris’ campaign said that she will be the first the candidate in many decades to skip the event because she would rather on the campaign trail.
