(DCNF)—CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten explained on Monday how disastrously low Democrats’ popularity ratings are, based on recent polling.
Polls released by CNN/SSRS and NBC News on Sunday showed the Democratic Party at an all-time low popularity with voters. Enten, on “CNN News Central” referenced these polls and highlighted that Democrats in Congress have even worse approval ratings than the party at large.
“We’re in March Madness times. Terrible, terrible, terrible to quote the great Charles Barkley. ‘View Democratic Party favorably,’ CNN/SSRS, look at this: 29%. NBC News, you want to go lower than that? How about 27%? Both are record lows,” Enten said. “The lowest going back to 1992 in CNN polling, the lowest going back on record to 1990 in NBC News polling. The majority of Americans hold an unfavorable or negative view of the Democratic Party at this point. All I can say is I’m a big fan of the oldies. So I’m going to quote Chubby Checker: ‘How low can you go?’”
“What about congressional Democrats specifically? You think these numbers are low? How about this one? Holy Toledo, ‘voters’ views of the Democrats in Congress,’” he continued. “Among all voters, disapprove 68%. And look at the approved number, just 21%, even lower than the Democratic Party at large. This is the lowest on record for Democrats according to Quinnipiac University polling.”
The data reporter also noted that even Democratic voters hold negative views of their own party.
“You think these numbers are bad? Let’s go to this side of the screen. We’ll look at how Democratic voters feel. Get this, the plurality of Democratic voters disapprove of Democrats in Congress at 49%, and just 40% approve,” he said. “Horrible, horrible, horrible. Oh my goodness gracious. You just can’t get worse than these numbers.”
Nearly two-thirds of Democrats want their congressional lawmakers to resist making compromises with President Donald Trump, according to the NBC News poll.
“They do not want this compromise anymore. They want to be more like Republicans. Get up to that stage and fight,” Enten added. “And right now, they feel like their leaders in Congress are simply put, not doing so. And that is why their approval rating for congressional Democrats is at an all-time low, even among Democrats, with more disapproving than approving.”
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer led Democrats to ultimately pass a Republican spending bill on Friday, sparking infighting within the Democratic Party.
Former MSNBC host Chris Matthews and “Morning Joe” host Mika Brzezinski argued Monday that unchecked falsehoods from President Donald Trump and Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) head Elon Musk are responsible for Democrats’ plunging popularity.
“Nobody checks the facts anymore,” Matthews claimed. “And the lies are getting through to the American people.”
Brzezinski agreed, adding, “I do think there should be a war room, a central command and a person, a voice, a figure who can call out the disinformation.”
