RAIR Foundation USA was on-site to document Ruby Mekker’s impactful address in Ottawa. In her passionate talk, Mekker, a retired dairy farmer, former Special Education teacher, and advocate for the well-being of individuals near industrial wind turbines, revealed the deeply destructive consequence, these projects impose on rural communities. Collaborating with Concerned Citizens of North Stormont, she was crucial in organizing and navigating through an Environmental Review Tribunal, exposing the substantial personal and financial burdens of opposing such developments.
Mekker began her talk by underscoring the significance of non-violent resistance, encouraging the audience to pay attention to the “notice of non-consent” outlined in the handout. She linked the proliferation of industrial wind turbines to a provincial government mandate, citing a request for nearly 3000 megawatts of battery storage, a move she attributes to the left-wing government’s pursuit of so-called “renewable energy” goals.
Having been involved in the fight against wind power since 2014, Mekker shared heartbreaking testimonials from individuals living near turbines, detailing health issues such as headaches, joint pain, and brain fog. She stressed the negative impact on people’s lives and the fact that many had to leave their homes due to the harmful effects of living near to wind turbines.
