After years of referring to President-elect Donald Trump’s questioning of the 2020 election results as a “threat to Democracy,” a sizable number of Democrat lawmakers and voters are calling on Democrats to commit, in their words, “insurrection” by refusing to certify Trump’s November election victory.
On Friday, a group of around 50 left-wing protesters gathered in Washington D.C. to protest the looming electoral certification, which is scheduled for Monday, January 6. Protesters held signs reading “Honor Your Oath,” and “Insurrectionists Can’t Be President,” as they chanted “lock him up,” footage obtained by independent reporter Ford Fischer shows.
One of the protesters held up a sign reading “Deny, Defend, Depose,” a reference to the manifesto penned by accused killer Luigi Mangione, who allegedly gunned down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel last month.

“We’ve all gathered here today for the same reason, to demand that Congress uphold the 14th Amendment of the United States Constitution, specifically section 3 that states that an insurrectionist cannot be president,” one of the speakers told the crowd, referencing a Civil War era amendment that was cited in attempt to bar Trump from the primary and general election ballots. The statute was cited by Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold in her decision to bar Trump — who was never accused or convicted of “insurrection” or “rebellion — from the ballot.
