How Mamdani Is Merging Socialist Activists With New York City Government

(Daily Signal)—When Zohran Mamdani said he’d govern New York City as a socialist, he meant it. And the way the mayor is doing that is by merging the Democratic Socialists of America and other left-wing groups with the official functions of city government.

It’s an ominous development for New York City.

Mamdani is creating a patronage machine—one writer cleverly coined the phrase “hipster Tammany Hall” to describe it—where he operates as the kingmaker of New York electoral politics and the chief administrator of New York’s government managerial class.

It’s that second function that could transform the city, if not permanently, at least for as a long as Mamdani is in office and probably for his successors too.

Ensuring that DSA candidates sit atop the ticket in local elections is one thing. Mamdani clearly intends to create an enduring coalition. But by integrating the larger left-wing organizing network into official government business he is more likely to transition New York from the financial capital of the United States into Havana on the Hudson.

Mamdani is doing this by creating new bureaucracies that prioritize its goals and is even funding an army of influencers who technically promote his agenda as private citizens but are functionally part of the larger governing apparatus. This has been engineered to the point where it’s increasingly unclear where the line is between the DSA and City Hall.

The Activist Machine

When Mamdani entered office one of his first official actions was to create the Office of Mass Engagement, which his administration said was part of a “long-term initiative to bring mass public participation into the work of governing.”

Mass participation in this case doesn’t just mean that the people of New York broadly are going to be more involved with the function of government. It means that the hordes of doorknockers, protesters, and DSA party organizers would get to keep doing what they are doing, but with a government check and official seal of approval.

Politico noted in May that Mamdani was copying the playbook created by the DSA, “perfected by 140,000 loyal foot soldiers” and now “underwritten by taxpayers.” It also noted that “it’s hard to ignore that this same electoral machinery was created to promote the mayor himself—and that the new office is stuffed with former campaign aides.”

These taxpayer-funded activists were unleashed to influence the Rent Guidelines Board hearing in June. And what do you know, the result of that hearing—by the allegedly nonpartisan board—was to enact a rent freeze in the city, fulfilling one of Mamdani’s promises.

The decision of that board has been called a “sham” by one former member who quit in protest. A lawsuit was even launched to challenge the decision. Over 100 texts and emails showing coordination between the “independent” board and the mayor’s office have been released.

“The contacts between City Hall and the [Rent Guidelines Board] were not only substantial, but also shocking, in that they show coordination and collaboration throughout the RGB’s process,” an attorney for the plaintiff said to a Staten Island court according to the New York Post.

An Army of Influencers

In addition to the activists working in an official capacity, Mamdani has marshaled a virtual army of online influencers who are not only perpetually exuberant about the mayor’s decisions but sound a lot like all the other equally enthusiastic online supporters.

That’s likely because they are being paid by the mayor’s office to pump his message and are naturally receiving marching orders too.

Even some left-leaning publications have caught on to what Mamdani is doing and have raised alarm bells.

The New York Times reported that Mamdani has quietly used taxpayer funds to create a “sprawling network of hundreds of friendly influencers to boost his priorities, provide positive depictions of his administration, and enhance his popularity.”

Not only that, but the administration, “regularly sends the influencers memos on the mayor’s priorities and encourages them to trumpet his accomplishments, all outside of public scrutiny. The missives are delivered in group chats on Signal, an encrypted messaging app designed to shield posts from public review.”

The Times noted concerns about a lack of transparency, but the Mamdani administration appears to be in no hurry to put guardrails around its practices.

And don’t think these influencers are just about cheerleading Mamdani’s policies. They are also being deployed to pressure private citizens and businesses.

Remember that creepy Tax Day ad where Mamdani personally targeted billionaire CEO Ken Griffin? That ad was supercharged by the influencers, of course. The move backfired in the sense that it caused Griffin to consider investing outside the city and will likely prompt businesses to think twice about operating in New York. But it was effective in another sense in that it tapped into the politics of resentment that drives so many of Mamdani’s supporters. Political capital is almost always more important than economic success to a true-believing socialist.

Expect more of the same.

Union Organizing from the Inside

Most recently, Mamdani stepped up his efforts to bolster union organizing in New York City by again wedding it to the function of government. On Sept. 7 he launched the Mayor’s Office of Worker Power, touted as the “first of its kind in the nation.”

The new agency was inspired by the “Emergency Workplace Organizing Committee, a joint effort of the Democratic Socialists of America and United Electrical Workers,” according to the City Reporter.

The administration touted the new organization as a way to operate as a kind of middleman between businesses and workers, though if you think this means that it will carry out its actions evenhandedly you are kidding yourself.

As Daily Signal contributor Michael Freund noted, it’s clear Mamdani wants City Hall to be both the organizer and referee in these disputes.

“The concern is not that workers are organizing,” Freund wrote. “They have every right to do so. The question is whether the same government helping them organize can also credibly investigate employers and enforce workplace laws involving those same disputes.”

That’s exactly right.

The problem isn’t that workers are organizing. It’s that the government will now have the thumb on the scale in one direction. And you can bet that when all is said and done the politically connected union bosses will come out on top.

When you take all these moves together—the integration of socialist activists into city management, the partnerships with influencers indirectly getting that sweet taxpayer cash, the creation of additional bureaucracies to control the economic and social conditions of the city, and the transformation of old ones to do the same—the picture becomes clear.

This is how Mamdani and other socialists aim to transform American politics, one major metropolitan area at a time. They are merging traditional Democrat machine politics with an even more aggressive agenda that will blur the line between day-to-day government function and partisan organizing.

The insiders win, the outsiders lose, and socialists stay in power whether the people want them to or not.

Those who want to thrive or just survive will have to play ball and give the administration what it wants, or else. These are the bitter fruits produced by the “warmth” of collectivism.
