  • Former MI6 chief Sir Richard Dearlove strongly endorses President Trump’s efforts to bring Greenland under U.S. control, viewing it as a vital step to bolster European security in the Arctic.
  • Dearlove argues that only American forces can effectively operate and maintain a sustained presence in Greenland’s extreme environment.
  • He proposes that Denmark lease Greenland to the United States for 100 years as a realistic path forward.
  • The island’s strategic importance is emphasized, including its vast mineral resources, missile defense role, control of Arctic sea routes, and protection of the critical GIUK gap against Russian naval threats.
  • U.S. interest in Greenland dates back to the 1860s but has grown urgent due to Russia’s ongoing aggression since the 2022 Ukraine invasion and China’s expanding Arctic ambitions.
  • Dearlove stresses that American oversight would make the northern approaches much safer for all Europeans and block Chinese influence, which he describes as “massively important.”
  • European leaders have reacted with alarm and rejection to ideas of financial deals or military action, while Britain’s Keir Starmer offers vague assurances about NATO while admitting more protection is needed.
  • The piece notes Washington’s long-standing frustration with Europe’s preference for social spending over defense readiness, creating vulnerabilities that Russia and China could exploit.
  • Reports suggest China’s mining investments in Greenland may have dual-use (military) potential, raising concerns about future espionage or bases.
  • Dearlove’s support, given his Cold War-era experience, signals growing acceptance among seasoned intelligence figures that securing Greenland under U.S. command may be essential to counter rising threats and preserve Western dominance in the Arctic.

Sir Richard Dearlove, who led Britain’s MI6 from 1999 to 2004, has come out in favor of President Trump’s drive to secure control over Greenland. In a recent interview, Dearlove argued that handing the island to American oversight would strengthen defenses across Europe against growing dangers from Russia and China. He pointed out the harsh Arctic conditions where only U.S. forces can maintain a sustained presence.

“There is a strong argument for reinforcing Europe’s security by putting a much greater representation of American forces, which are the only ones that can effectively cope up in Greenland,” Dearlove said. He went further, suggesting Denmark could lease the territory to the U.S. for a century to make it happen.

  • Why We Sell Gold and Silver by Weight, NOT Based on “Rarity” or “Collectability”

Greenland’s strategic value has drawn American attention for decades, starting as far back as the 1860s. Today, with Russia’s aggression in Ukraine ongoing since 2022 and China’s aggressive moves in global trade, the island’s role has become critical. It holds vast mineral resources, offers a shield against missile threats, and controls key access points in the Arctic, including the GIUK gap—a vital chokepoint for blocking Russian submarines from reaching the Atlantic.

European reactions have ranged from alarm to outright rejection. Some leaders expressed shock at the idea of financial payouts to Greenland’s small population or even military steps to claim it. British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer acknowledged that “more could be done to protect the area,” while trying to assure Trump of NATO’s commitment. Yet skepticism lingers in Washington over Europe’s long habit of skimping on defense budgets in favor of social programs.

Dearlove didn’t hold back on the benefits. American control would “make the Northern approach a lot safer for all Europeans, and it keeps the Chinese out too, which is also massively important,” he stated. This aligns with concerns that Beijing has been eyeing Arctic routes and resources as ice melts, potentially setting up bases that could challenge Western dominance.

Whispers in intelligence circles suggest China’s interest in Greenland goes beyond economics. Reports from sources like the Daily Mail indicate Beijing has already invested in mining projects there, raising fears of dual-use facilities that could serve military purposes. If left unchecked, this could turn the Arctic into a new front for espionage and influence operations, much like what’s seen in the South China Sea.

Trump’s revival of the Greenland proposal, first floated in 2019, comes at a time when alliances are tested. The Telegraph noted Britain’s Defence Secretary John Healey vowing not to allow U.S. use of UK bases for any aggressive moves on the island, highlighting transatlantic tensions. Still, Dearlove’s endorsement carries weight, given his track record in countering threats during the Cold War’s tail end.

For many, this boils down to raw necessity. Europe’s military shortcomings leave a vacuum that adversaries are eager to fill. Handing Greenland to capable American hands could prevent a larger crisis, echoing biblical calls for wise stewardship in the face of gathering storms. As Putin rebuilds his forces and Xi expands his reach, bold actions like Trump’s might be the safeguard the free world needs.

In the end, Dearlove’s support signals a shift among seasoned operatives who see past the headlines. With Arctic competition heating up, securing Greenland under U.S. command could prove essential for preserving peace and prosperity in an increasingly hostile world.
