(WND)—The U.S. Supreme Court right now is considering the question of who qualifies for “birthright citizenship” in America.
For decades, it’s been handed out to any child of anyone who is born in the United States, meaning there are a lot of illegal aliens who now have American citizen children, who may or may not have any allegiance at all to the U.S.
President Donald Trump issued an executive order canceling that, because the original constitutional amendment limits such privileges to those “subject to the jurisdiction” of the U.S., and not everyone is.
A lawsuit from leftists followed immediately, and the fight is at the high court now. And while a decision is forthcoming, and could resolve the immediate question, even that might not be sustained for long.
Because one senator has proposed a constitutional amendment to make the status of birthright citizenship clear:
A report in the Washington Examiner said Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., is proposing changes to made the document read: “A person born in the United States may only be considered ‘subject to the jurisdiction of the United States’ if the person is born in the United States of parents, one of whom is — 1) a citizen or national of the United States; 2) an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States whose residence is in the United States; or 3) an alien with lawful status under the immigration laws performing active service in the Armed Forces.”
It adds that, “Congress shall have the power to carry out this article through appropriate legislation.”
“Under current interpretations of American law, anyone born on American soil automatically becomes a U.S. citizen, regardless of whether the parent was here legally or not. This is wrong and not at all the intent of those who wrote the 14th Amendment,” Paul explained.
The 14th Amendment dates to July 9, 1868, and was a response to the Civil War, providing citizenship for freed slaves.
“All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside,” it reads.
Paul said, “We are a country filled with immigrants, and legal immigration is valuable and should be protected. But we are also a country whose borders have been too open and our generosity exploited too often. President Trump has moved to seal our border from illegal immigrants more than any other president. But we will have more to do. We need to make sure that only children born to legal residents of the U.S. are automatically citizens.”
The issue erupted into a firestorm during Joe Biden’s tenure in Washington, as his policies allowed in literally millions of illegal aliens, including criminals and terrorists. The huge descendant population of those illegals without a course correction by the U.S. could mean literally tens of millions of new “citizens” with little or no allegiance to the United States.
